Every stroke takes us closer to land - half way mark
There are many mile stones that you can come up with for a challenge like this but there are none to compare to the half way mark. We are now less than 1300 nautical miles from Barbados. To celebrate i was called out of bed by the smell of 5 slices each of salami. It really does not feel that different being in the middle of the ocean to just a few days into the journey. The scenary is the same and surprisingly it does not feel any more exposed or scary. Moral on board is high and we are all optimistic that the second half will go quickly with following winds. A topic of discussion today were our highlights of the first half.
Steves was going for a swim in the middle of the ocean and the feeling of swimming over a thousand miles from land. Closely followed by rowing during a sun rise listening to Dire Straits blaring out of his Sennheisers. Als was the very first bit of salami and cheese or maybe the swim. Marins or Piki as he is now known was covering 68Nm in a day. Mine has been the laughter as new stories of the effects of sleep deprivation are told. On that note.. Piki and I were at the oars as the stars twinkled above and the moon laid out a glittering carpet to Barbados. We were an hour into our session both silent contenplating life in the breathless air. "TEN MINUTES", a call from the bow cabin, We turn to look to see Steve confused at himself and dissapointed that he had to go rowing in ten and not back to bed. We tell him go back to sleep and Piki and I roll around the deck in laughter for the remaining hour.
