Slovenian-British Ocean Rowing Expedition

Petrols attack

I am lying in the stern cabin with the sun beeming down onto Simon and Marin outside. After a frustrating (and very wet) few days we are again making good progress with 63 nm covered yesterday. The current average speed is 3.7nm.p.h so if the conditions stay as they are we should be in for a big millage total tomorow also.

Al and I had a small winged visitor last night at about 3am. We have LED lights on the stern of the boat which allow us to see approaching waves at night, these lights also seem to attract the little Petrols during the night. One of them flew right into my arm and tubmled along the deck into the foot well just outside the rear cabin. As I was steering Al jumped to the rescue, carifully picking the little bird up and throughing him back into the air. Unfortunatly he must have been stunned as he came back to the deck with a thud at the same speed as he was thrown into the air!

We set him onto a pice of towel next to my rowing postion and an hour later he was up and away safely.

At 0730 I awoke (thinking it was 0800 and time for my shift). When we are getting ready we often ask the person outside what they are wearing, "have you a coat on?", "are you wearing a thermal?" etc. Simon seemed a little confused when i asked "are you in fancy dress?"....."Pardon"....are you in fancy dress?......what are you on about??....grr are you wearing the chicken suit?....Go back to bed steve you are not on for another 30 min"

I was getting more and more frustrated with Si and i needed to know if i should wear my chicken suit for the next shift!

I have never experenced sleep deprevation quite like this before and the effects are really quite apparent on each of us. I wonder now which you could last longer without - Sleep or food???

The forcast is for settled good weather over the next few days so we are looking forward to getting those miles in.
