We caught a FISH!!!
Marin set the line today and let out a little more line than normal saying we will catch a bigger fish. He was right! Thanks to Marins dad for teaching him so well. Marin was given a rod and reel from Alutecnos for the expedition and it is capable of landing almost anything. I was steering when I spotted the bite. Being the closest I grabed the rod from the holder. The brake was set to 3 of 6 and the line was flying out so I slowly put on the brake and began to feel the force of the fish.
Being very careful not to put it on too much and end up dragged over the side and into the blue. After 15 minutes it was getting a little tired and so was I. We caught a sight of a large golden Dorado 20m from the boat and couldnt belive its size.
Everyone came on deck to assist in the operation. We struggled to get it out of the water and onto deck, but eventually Marin grabed it by the tail with a towel and it was on deck.
It was around 15kg. We started to dicuss if we should try to eat it or not. After a short while we decided that we would strugle to eat even half of it and would have to throw the rest back to the sea. Although it would be eaten by somthing and not wasted we didnt feel right doing it so set it free. We were now all very happy about our exciting catch but still very hungry.
Before we put the line in we had a dicussion on what size we would keep so we wouldnt have to hold a wriggling fish while debating our ethics next time. As I set the line out not more than 20 seconds had passed before I had another smaller one, perfect for the nights meal.
Steve grabbed it out of the water and filleted it to suppliment our dried meals.
So a big thanks to the sea gods and to Alutecnos.
